The Research

The class had several brainstorming sessions. Families brainstormed when they weren't in class to figure out ways to raise awareness.

The experience of research raised awareness.

Students asked if they could mail bottled water to their neighbors. When they learned about possible restrictions on mailing water. One student said, "Maybe we can send lots of water filters so their water can be safe."

Students share their knowledge included harvesting rain water, reducing our use of water to be good consumers and good stewards.

Students and parents report a heightened level of awareness an increased focus on conservation.

How it Began

In February, 2021, Texas went in the history books for the worst winter storm the state has ever experienced. Many families lost electricity, gas, water.

Some of Browder's students attended class in hats, coats, and gloves while repairs were under way in their homes.

Some students share about frozen fruit and traveling to another home to electricity, then those families had to pack up and go to the next house because that house lost electricity.

Browder shared with her students that for many Texans, the effects were temporary, but for some countries, not having access to basic resources, like sanitary water, is the norm.

Browder introduced her students the United Nation's Sustainable Development Goal 6.  Goal 6 commits to "Ensure availability of  and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all."

When is it?

Families will walk on May 23 raising awareness of the water crisis.

Because of COVID protocols, this is not a school-sponsored event. Families are also not walking in groups, each family will walk its on route to avoid gathering.

Ways to Connect

Students came up with a list of hashtags to use during the walk.  Families can use these hashtags on social media to connect to friends and the Mock Global 6K:

#CoraSpencerAllStarWalkers

#WaterLittleHelpers

#MockGlobal6K

#CoraSpencer

  • Share how they plan to participate in the Mock Global 6K

  • Cheer them on

  • Share how they are conserving water

  • Share what they have learned about the water crisis

What is it?

Mrs. Browder's Kindergarten class got the idea to create a Mock Global 6K when they were researching about the water crisis impacting come of our neighboring countries.

World Vision is an organization that hosts a Global 6K to raise funds and awareness about the water crisis.

The class will not be raising funds. They are focused on raising awareness.
